STUCK IN OIL? INDUSTRY STIGMA AND BARRIERS TO CROSS-INDUSTRY CAREER MOBILITY

How does employment in a stigmatized industry shape workers’ career mobility? Drawing on categorical stigma theory, we argue that affiliation with a stigmatized industry signals cultural misfit and reputational risk to prospective employers, constraining workers’ ability to transition across industry boundaries, even when they hold transferable skills.
