Product Competition and the Rise of Zombie ETFs: Evidence from Korea

The ETF industry has expanded rapidly, raising concerns about whether investor demand can support the growing number of products. This study shows that greater competition among similar ETFs increases the likelihood of zombie ETF formation in Korea, especially among non-market ETFs. Zombie ETFs also exhibit lower trading activity, greater illiquidity, and higher expense ratios.
