Finance majors seek to know the basic types of financial management decisions and the role of the financial manager, to know the financial implications of the different forms of business organization, to know the goal of financial management, and to understand the conflicts of interest that can arise between owners and managers.

Finance has four submajors: corporate finance, investment, financial institutions and international finance. Corporate finance deals with the capital structure of the firm and long and short-term financing. Major job opportunities include the treasurer and controller of a firm. Investment works with financial assets such as stocks, bonds and value of financial assets, risk versus return and asset allocation. Job opportunities include stockbroker or financial advisor, portfolio manager and security analyst.

Financial institutions concerns the study of companies that specialize in financial matters - banks, insurance companies and brokerage firms. Job opportunities are found in banking and insurance, to name a few. International finance allows graduates to work in other countries or to at least travel on a regular basis. Students need to be familiar with exchange rates and political risk, and to understand the customs of other countries. Speaking a foreign language fluently is alo helpful.
